Reading Room arrangements
The Noel Butlin Archives Centre Reading Room is located on the
Ground Floor of the Menzies Building (ANU
Building 2).
Most archival material is held in our off-site repository.
Records are retrieved daily from the repository, for delivery in the Reading
Room by 3 pm.
Please consult our List of Holdings
to identify the records you would like to research. In some case
electronic or paper copies of finding aids for individual collections
can be provided in advance. Please contact the Archives to inquire
about the finding aids.
Access
Generally, staff or students of any tertiary institution may consult
records that are relevant to their field of study. When necessary,
the Centre’s staff will seek written permission from depositors
for non-academic researchers wishing to use the collections. For
further details see Access Agreement.
For the Centre's whereabouts, opening hours, etc please see Location
and Facilities.
Notice of visits
All first-time researchers (or those beginning a new research topic)
should call the Centre on (02) 6125 2219 to make an appointment
to discuss their research requirements.
All returning researchers are advised to contact the Centre and
give advance notice of their visit to ensure that the records they
wish to consult will be available to them and that the Centre will
be open at the time they plan to visit.
Using finding aids to identify documents for research may take
some time. Researchers are advised to allow plenty of time to identify
and order relevant records. Researchers should also consult the
List of Holdings before visiting
the Centre and advise the staff of their topic before their first
visit.
For details of other finding aids please see our Finding
Aids Fact Sheet.
Mail queries
Unfortunately, the Centre's staff cannot undertake research on
our clients' behalf. We will respond to written requests for information
about the holdings in general and about particular collections,
but cannot undertake research within a collection.
The Centre maintains a list of professional
researchers who are willing to undertake such work.
Photocopying and photography
Standard photocopying services are available at the Noel Butlin
Archives Centre and University Archives. All copying will be done
by Archives staff, and researchers are limited to 200 pages per
month. For current charges and other details, please see Fact Sheet No. 1: Photocopying Services.
Photographic work can be undertaken by arrangement with the Centre.
For current charges and other details see Fact Sheet No. 2: Photography Services.
The Centre reserves the right to refuse to copy any material where
damage to the records may result or where copying may contravene
copyright law or agreements with depositors.
